Britain's
world no 3 Laura Davies returned to the winner's circle with a one stroke victory in the
Hennessy Cup at the Golf and Land-club, Cologne, on Sunday. The 33 year-old world no 3 won
on both the American and European Tours early in the season, but had suffered a mini-slump
in the summer after a run of putting problems. But, after starting the day two ahead, she
shot a 74 for level par 288, and it was good enough to take the £45,000 top prize by a
shot from Australia's Anne-Marie Knight, last year's top rookie on the European Tour.
"This is one title that I've always wanted to win," said Davies, who had
finished second and third in the past and has now won 52 career titles.US Open Champion
Alison Nicholas, who had moved in front with birdies at the first two holes, finished two
shots behind in joint third on 290 after dropping a shot at the relatively easy par five
last.Another Briton, Lisa Hackney, and defending champion Helen Alfredsson finished on the
same mark - the Swedish defending champion and three time winner saw her chance of a
fourth win disappear when she carelessly missed from under a foot for par at the 17th.
Davies opened by three-putting the first from 30 feet - "Just what I didn't
want" - but birdies at the fifth, eighth and 12th set her on the road to
victory.Swedish players - Alfredsson (three times), Liselotte Neumann (twice) and Annika
Sorenstam - have won the title for the past six years. "It's great to have broken the
jinx," said Davies. |
