AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Another excellent round
of golf by 41-year-old Mark O'Meara finally produced
what his great career so far had been missing, a Major Championship.
It was all decided on the final green at
Augusta National
Golf Club on Sunday. When O'Meara holed a 20-foot
birdie putt to take the green jacket out of the reach
of FredCouples and David Duval who both finished 1 stroke back at 8-under-par.
O'Meara finished with three birdies on his
final four holes on his way to a final round 67.
The real surprise of The Masters though was
58-year-old great, Jack Nicklaus. Playing in his 40th
Masters, Nicklaus was in the hunt going into the final
nine holes when he was only three strokes back from the lead. But he couldn't match the 30 he shot on the final nines holes in 1986 to
win
his 5th green jacket.
Tiger Woods finished in eighth-place six
strokes behind his good friend O'Meara. Woods who shot
a championship record 18-under-par last year found the
going tough with
lot's of wayward iron shots and was never really was in
contention to challenge the leaders.
